Committee Overview

The CAEP Resident Section (RS) serves to represent and advocate for Canadian Emergency Medicine Residents as defined by Section 18 of the CAEP By-Laws (Appendix 1).

Our goal is to assist CAEP and address its vision and mission with our membership by

promoting the interests of emergency physicians and residents and the specialty of

emergency medicine in Canada. We do this by supporting resident wellness, medical student mentorship, academic and professional networking, and educational growth.

Key Achievements & Highlights

  • Welcome packages: A physical package sent to incoming FRCPC and CCFP-EM residents; include a welcome letter signed by the RS President, a flyer of CAEP membership benefits, and a welcome “gift” - previously keychains, lanyards, trauma shears

  • CaRMS Information Session: a running list of dates for FRCPC-EM information sessions are disseminated (via Instagram and the calendar on the medical student tab of the CAEP website). Past medical student reps have chosen to host their own information sessions, inviting PDs from across the country to sit on a combined panel (grouped by geographic region, for example).

  • Resident Grand Rounds:  a “special” CAEP National Grand Rounds is reserved for resident speakers. A topic can be decided, or a general call is published.

  • Mentorship Program: a matching system of medical student with resident (or staff) based on geographic area, career interest, and/or personal identity

  • Representation in various CAEP working groups, panels, and position papers: including Women in Medicine mentorship panel, working group on compensation for people with lived experience (PWLE), Wellness in EM, and more.

  • Awards Selection: the committee is responsible for selecting awards for resident of the year (FRCPC and CCFP-EM), as well as a medical student achievement award (NEW).

  • Enhanced Competency Directory: first published (and last updated) in 2017, our education lead and VP are updating this comprehensive document that outlines all opportunities for Enhanced Competencies (A scholarly activity or clinical area pertinent to the practice of emergency medicine that is pursued for at least 6 months as part of emergency medicine residency training) in Canada, to be presented at the 2026 CAEP Conference (NEW)

  • Governance: we reviewed and updated our Terms of Reference (last updated in 2022), and developed for the first time an “operations manual”, outlining key projects, timelines, and contacts to facilitate transition for our very high turnover group (NEW).

  • CAEP Conference: organization of a pre-conference medical student and learner day. This year we will host an FRCPC program director panel, an ECG interpretation course with Dr. Jessie McLaren, a peer-to-peer crash course in how to succeed as an EM learner, several hands-on skill building stations, and a social.

  • Newly created committee positions (NEW)

    • Past President (ex-officio)

      • Be a non-voting, Ex Officio member of the RS Executive Committee

      • Provide continuity, mentorship and institutional memory to incoming Executive

      • Offer counsel on strategic issues, advocacy priorities, and organization governance

      • Invited to attend all CAEP RS Executive meetings and required to attend at least the first 3 meetings of the year.

    • Health Equity + Wellness Lead

      • Be a voting member of the RS Executive Committee

      • Work with public relations officer to identify and highlight resident leaders who are engaged with health equity or EDI initiatives

      • Promote inclusive practices for executive elections and events

      • Foster trust and relationship between CAEP, the resident section, and grassroots voices working with marginalized populations seen in Canadian emergency departments

      • Build and maintain relationships between the RS and EDI-focused CAEP committees including but not limited to: Social Emergency Medicine, Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity, Anti-Racism and Anti-Colonialism, Bioethics, Global Emergency Medicine, Women in Emergency Medicine, Wellness Committee

      • If of interest, the Health Equity Lead is strongly encouraged to participate in one of the aforementioned CAEP committees

Impact & Outcomes

  • Broadly, our work helps to keep medical learners engaged with the CAEP community. We use our platform to share CAEP’s education and advocacy initiatives and represent the resident/medical student voice in as many discussions and decisions as possible. This includes the CAEP Board of Directors, the National Forum, the Conference and Education committees, and many other formal and ad hoc groups.

Metrics & Data

  • Section meetings are held virtually approximately every 4 weeks (8 between August 2025 and April 2026). Attendance is variable but quorum (50% +1) is always met.

  • Elections: We saw a significant increase in elections candidates from prior years. In 2024, all positions were acclaimed (no votes were required). In 2025, 23 people applied across 7 positions, with all positions having at least 2 candidates, 3 positions (public relations, conference liaison, and CCFP-EM rep) having 4 candidates, and the medical student rep having 9 candidates.

  • Medical student and resident program: As of April 13, there are 36 students and 49 residents registered for our pre-conference programming.

Challenges & Opportunities

  • Lack of institutional memory: to date, handover has been extremely fragmented, and many projects have gotten lost, impeding real progress

  • Outreach and two-way resident engagement: we have no process for resident feedback but hope to incorporate this into our AGM at this year’s CAEP conference.

  • Meaningful EDI work: after the introduction of a Wellness and EDI Lead, we are now looking to find ways to utilize the skillsets of this individual in a meaningful way. Next year, we hope to better integrate this individual into other CAEP EDI-related projects and committees.

  • Conference coordination: depending on feedback and attendance at this year’s pre-conference session and AGM, we may re-organize the way that programming is delivered (throughout conference rather than pre-conference, removing overlap between RS AGM and overall CAEP AGM).

Looking Ahead (Next Year)

  • Resident-led national grand rounds x 2

  • Continued governance improvements

  • More intentional use of social media to connect and engage the resident community

  • Selection of first ever medical student award
