Emergency Physician of the Year Award Recipient (Ontario-Urban)

Dr. Steve Lin

Dr. Steve Lin is an emergency physician, clinician-scientist, and Chief of the Department of Emergency Medicine at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. An Associate Professor at the University of Toronto and Scientist at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, he is internationally recognized for his contributions to resuscitation science, emergency medicine research, and health-system leadership. Over his career, he has authored more than 90 peer-reviewed publications, secured millions of dollars in research funding, and contributed to international resuscitation guidelines through organizations including the American Heart Association and the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR).

Over the past two years, Dr. Lin has demonstrated exceptional leadership in patient care, research, and advocacy. He has advanced care for patients with substance use disorders by creating pathways to improve access to addiction treatment, supporting initiatives for opioid replacement therapy, and studying the relationship between naloxone use and out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. As a leading resuscitation researcher, he also directs a national multicentre trial investigating optimal epinephrine dosing during cardiac arrest. Beyond the emergency department, he has strengthened connections between hospitals and community organizations to better support patients experiencing homelessness, including helping develop overnight shelter options for individuals discharged from the emergency department.

Dr. Lin’s impact extends to health-system leadership and advocacy. When provincial funding reductions threatened emergency department staffing levels, he successfully used a data-driven approach to advocate for the restoration of physician resources, helping protect safe patient care. Colleagues recognize him as a thoughtful leader, accomplished researcher, dedicated educator, and tireless advocate whose work has improved emergency care locally, provincially, and nationally.
