Emergency Physician of the Year Award Recipient (Prairies-Urban)

Dr. Zoë Piggott

Dr. Zoë Piggott is an emergency physician, medical toxicologist, and Site Medical Director of the St. Boniface Hospital Emergency Department in Winnipeg. An Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba, she has built a distinguished career in emergency medicine, transport medicine, toxicology, and medical education. In addition to her clinical practice, she has served as Medical Director for Vanguard Air Care and as a transport physician with STARS, helping advance critical care and aeromedical transport throughout Manitoba.

Over the past two years, Dr. Piggott has provided outstanding leadership during the transition of the St. Boniface Emergency Department into a new, significantly larger facility. She organized months of multidisciplinary simulation exercises involving physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and support staff to test workflows, identify safety concerns, and ensure readiness before the move. She also implemented a RAZ-SURGE process to expedite care for vulnerable patients during periods of severe overcrowding, advocated for improved admission pathways, and led the development of an expedited chest pain pathway to improve patient flow and safety.

Colleagues describe Dr. Piggott as an innovative, compassionate, and highly effective leader who leads by example and consistently puts patients and colleagues first. They praise her commitment to collaboration, mentorship, and team culture, noting her ability to build strong relationships across departments and create an environment where staff feel respected, supported, and empowered. Her dedication to education, including founding the Clinical Cadaver Educational Program and mentoring residents and junior physicians, earned her the 2025 PARIM Mentor of the Year Award and reflects her lasting impact on emergency medicine in Manitoba.
