Dr. Tom Currie

Dr. Tom Currie is a highly respected emergency physician who has dedicated more than 25 years to the practice and advancement of emergency medicine in Nova Scotia. He spent most of his career providing care at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and has also served patients in rural communities such as Neil’s Harbour. Throughout his career, he has been recognized as a skilled clinician, educator, and leader, known for his exceptional diagnostic abilities, broad clinical expertise, and commitment to delivering compassionate, patient-centred care.


In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Currie has played an important leadership role within emergency medicine locally, provincially, and nationally. As a former department head and long-time CAEP member, he fostered a culture of teamwork, lifelong learning, and professional development. He encouraged physician engagement with CAEP, served on numerous committees, and contributed to the growth of the specialty through mentorship, advocacy, and service.


His nominator and colleagues describe Dr. Currie as a great leader, admired teacher, trusted mentor, and one of the finest emergency physicians they have worked with. They highlight his kindness, patience, compassion, and unwavering dedication to both patients and colleagues. Fellow physicians credit him with supporting them early in their careers and helping them remain in emergency medicine, while patients value his clear communication, clinical judgment, and genuine commitment to ensuring nothing “falls through the cracks.”
