Dr. Kathy Boutis

Dr. Kathy Boutis is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Toronto, Senior Associate Scientist at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), and an internationally recognized pediatric emergency physician and researcher. Over more than two decades, she has transformed the care of children with musculoskeletal injuries through high-impact clinical research, helping establish evidence-based approaches that reduce unnecessary imaging, immobilization, and follow-up care while improving patient outcomes. Her research has directly influenced practice guidelines and clinical decision-making in pediatric emergency departments across Canada and internationally.

In addition to her clinical research accomplishments, Dr. Boutis is a pioneer in medical education research, particularly in the science of visual diagnosis and image interpretation. She developed ImageSim, an innovative, evidence-based learning platform that uses cognitive simulation, deliberate practice, and competency-based assessment to teach interpretation of radiographs, ultrasound images, and other visually diagnosed conditions. The platform has been adopted internationally and has expanded access to high-quality medical education for clinicians around the world, including those working in resource-limited settings.

Colleagues and nominators describe Dr. Boutis as an exceptional scientist, mentor, and innovator whose work has advanced both emergency medicine and medical education. They highlight her ability to challenge long-standing practices with rigorous evidence, her commitment to collaboration and mentorship, and her remarkable success in supporting the next generation of clinician-scientists. Widely regarded as a leader in pediatric emergency medicine research, Dr. Boutis is recognized for improving patient care while shaping how physicians learn, practice, and deliver evidence-based medicine.
