2S/LGBTQIA+ Health and Cultural Humility in Emergency Medicine
This free comprehensive course is designed to enhance healthcare providers’ ability to support 2S/LGBTQIA+ community members effectively. Through three detailed modules, participants will gain insights into the historical and current challenges faced by 2S/LGBTQIA+ individuals in mental health care, understand the evolution of gender and sexuality classifications, and learn best practices for providing gender-affirming care. Each module is structured to accommodate flexible learning, allowing you to complete sections at your own pace. Join us in fostering a more inclusive and compassionate healthcare environment.

This program will provide participants with knowledge and skills so that they can:

Identify inequities experienced by 2SLGBTQIA+ communities accessing emergency medicine care

Recognize existing healthcare disparities for 2SLGBTQIA+ populations

Describe concepts and terminology that relate to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community

Explain how stigmatization, intersectionality and discrimination have led to the health disparities experienced by 2SLGBTQIA+ people

Describe strategies that enhance their own capacity to provide affirming and inclusive care to 2SLGBTQIA+ patients and apply them in daily medical practice

Describe the evolution of how gender and sexuality have been classified in the DSM from DSM-I through DSM-5, and analyze the implications of these classifications on healthcare practices.

Identify and differentiate between different types of biases (e.g., affinity bias, confirmation bias, status quo bias) as they manifest in healthcare settings, particularly in emergency care for 2S/LGBTQIA+ patients.

Reflect on their own biases and recognize how these biases may influence interactions with 2S/LGBTQIA+ patients in emergency care settings.

Understand 2S/LGBTQIA+ health disparities and drivers, and how to address them.

Describe best practices for providing gender-affirming care to transgender and non-binary patients in emergency room settings, including considerations for hormone therapy and psychological support.

Identify three types of gender affirming transition.

Recognize common barriers to effective emergency care for transgender, non-binary and gender expansive patients and have a better idea of how you can improve medical experiences for 2S/LGBTQIA+ patients.

Explain a surgical assessment and how to prescribe hormone therapies.

Reflect on how bias can impact patient care and what strategies you can employ to combat its impacts.
