Emergency Physician of the Year Award Recipient (Ontario-Rural, Remote, Small Urban)
Dr. Crystal Doyle

Dr. Crystal Doyle is a rural emergency physician and longtime leader at Winchester District Memorial Hospital whose career has been defined by clinical excellence, advocacy, and service to her community. A former Chief of Emergency Medicine, she successfully led her department through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and continues to play a vital leadership role as physician scheduler and department advocate. Widely respected by colleagues, she is recognized as a trusted mentor, an exceptional clinician, and a champion for both patient care and physician wellness.
Over the past two years, Dr. Doyle has spearheaded several initiatives to strengthen emergency care in her community. Most notably, she successfully advocated to the Ministry of Health for funding to add an additional emergency physician shift, resulting in a reported 50–75% reduction in emergency department wait times. She also supports smaller and underserved communities through Ontario’s Emergency Department Locum Program (EDLP) and contributes to emergency medicine education as an ATLS instructor. Colleagues credit her leadership with improving departmental resilience, workflow, teamwork, and patient outcomes in a resource-limited rural setting.
Dr. Doyle’s impact extends far beyond the hospital walls. In February 2026, while off duty at a local ski hill, she led the resuscitation of a critically injured 13-year-old following a tragic accident in Wakefield, providing lifesaving care in front of a stunned community and helping achieve return of spontaneous circulation. Colleagues describe her as a role model who combines extraordinary clinical skill with humility, compassion, and authenticity. They praise her willingness to share her own vulnerabilities, support colleagues, and demonstrate that great emergency medicine is built on teamwork, resilience, and community.
